Grammy-nominated Christian hard rockers, Skillet, performed on the roof of a Wendy’s Wednesday last week (8/18/10). The event was hosted by 97.9x for their annual Roof-a-thon where the 97.9X DJ’s to get out of the studio for 3 straight days, and broadcast from the ROOF of Wendy’s to raise money for the Scranton Chapter of the American Red Cross. One of our lovely Rockpit buddies was kind enough to send a picture of his “minions” with Wendy. What is even better is he included a video of their performance! Thanks so much for sending us this Matt! You rock!

August 27th, 2010 by BridgetNew Blog/Music Finding Service: Shuffler
August 26th, 2010 by BridgetI was reading my most favorite social media site Mashable and they featured a new blog finding service that is all kinds of awesome. The site is called Shuffler and it’s a combination of Pandora and Stumble Upon, you enter a channel of music that you like (obviously I picked Rock) and they take you to a blog and play the most recent streaming song that the blog published. It’s really easy to switch from song to song and if you want to spend more time on the blog you can pause the song while you poke around.
The system isn’t perfect yet, in fact most of the songs that I got on the rock channel were not exactly my style but the concept is awesome. When they include more blogs they will have more channels and more options. It’s super simple to use and probably the best time killer that I’ve played with this year.

It Boys “End of the World” video with all sorts of “stars”
August 25th, 2010 by BridgetI was on the train heading back to NYC when I got a little gem in my Rockpit inbox. It was an email from the group It Boys promoting their new video for “End of the World“. The song has the typical pop punk sound that you would expect from Good Charlotte and guess what – it even has Benji Madden in it! …and Holly Madison …and Ryan Sheckler (hmm)
It’s pretty much chock full of any reality TV star and is the formulaic video for the genre. That being said, I’m still posting about it. Not sure why but there is something fascinating about the “star fuckery” going on here.
Dommin (“My Heart, Your Hands”) @ Gramercy Theater
August 21st, 2010 by BridgetDommin, the group responsible for the rock hit song My Heart Your Hands, performed before Volbeat last Friday, August 13 at Gramercy Theater. I was there for a grand total of 28 minutes in my professional photographer capacity. I thought they were really good and it didn’t hurt that their bass player looked like a combination of Elvis Presley and Tyler Connolly of Theory of a Deadman.
The pictures are available here (see below) as well as on The Audio Perv and on the Rockpit Report.
Required Reading
August 20th, 2010 by BridgetSummer used to mean that I had a pile of books I had to read before school started again. Now it means pretty much the same thing as the rest of the year except I am sweating while doing it. Once I left school, it wasn’t like Math. I couldn’t forget about it as soon as I finished my final exam. Oddly enough I spend more time reading now than I ever did in college or in high school. However now I get to choose what I read, and my method of choice is websites. Google Reader to be exact.
I used to have all the websites I followed for Rockpit in my reader but I found it was too overwhelming to have over a thousand new messages for me to read. This week I decided to condense to the most important, informative and concise blogs possible. I think I have it down to a satisfying but manageable list and I wanted to share it with you so you are never lacking in your music news and gossip.
First, is obviously The Rockpit Report because we don’t copy and paste press releases but we ask questions about what is going on in the music industry. Plus I think by law I am required to put us first.
The rest of the blogs in my reader are: Blabbermouth, Noise Creep, Antiquiet, The Audio Perv and finally The PRP.
This is our long form version of Follow Friday on Twitter so DO IT! It’s good for you.
Shameless Myles Kennedy plugs
August 16th, 2010 by BridgetI love Myles Kennedy. A lot of our readers love Myles Kennedy. Everyone in the world should love Myles Kennedy.
Myles and Slash are coming to NYC in September and I was doing a little preparation for their arrival by gathering all of our Myles footage. Man, we have a lot. And all of it is killer.
The first (and the best) is a video from October 2009 when we went to San Diego for a CTIA Wireless Convention. Myles came along with Rockpit and performed an acoustic set that blew my mind. This was the first time I met him and I couldn’t believe how down to earth and chill he was.
Next, are the pictures from Rock on the Range in May where I saw him perform with Slash for the first time. They were posted on this blog but in case you missed them here they are. It was a great performance and I am such a huge fan of Slash and seeing Myles Kennedy out there in front of a large audience (my first time) was epic.
Finally there is the Back To Cali music video from Slash featuring Myles Kennedy that is just about perfect. It’s a compilation of footage from their live performances and is getting me pumped for them to come to New York (September 14). I can assure you that I will publish pictures, videos and whatever else I can gather from his visit! Check to see if he is coming to a city near you.
When life hands you lemons… chase butterflies!
August 16th, 2010 by BridgetLast week was a little wild. We had to say goodbye to our last intern, we were in and out of the office and the studio with the Great Socio and we were running around the NY/NJ/PA area with a video camera and SRL in hand. Long story short, the saying “when it rains, it pours” barely covers it.
Anyway, it’s no secret that I am a Discovery Channel fanatic but it’s not exactly the most common fact that my boyfriend is a huge animal nerd too. This weekend I told him that I either wanted a puppy or a penguin for my birthday. For a while it looked like the puppy was the frontrunner (I don’t exactly have room for a massive aquarium) but after watching this video I realized that
- No matter what happens in life, the simple things are the ones that matter
- I think I want a penguin instead.
Keepers of the Flame; Melvin Seals & the JGB @ the Brooklyn Bowl 8.11.10
August 12th, 2010 by kevinLast night a few friends and I headed down to the Brooklyn Bowl to check out Melvin Seals & the JGB (Jerry Garcia Band).
Being an obsessive self proclaimed aficionado of all things Jerry Garcia, I was extremely excited because this was the first time I had the opportunity to check out the “Keepers of the Flame”. Previously knowing only of Melvin’s work with the JGB since 1980, and next to nothing about the other current members of the band, I was slightly skeptical about whether or not this was going to be the real deal. Could they really put together a lineup worthy of playing this music that I have grown up with, cherished, and loved my whole life? Either way, I was very anxious and excited to find out.
If you’ve been reading my blog at all over the past couple weeks, you would know that Jerry Garcia died 15 years ago last week. It’s no secret that his presence is totally irreplaceable, but I hoped and prayed that the night ahead of me would prove that there is a group worthy of “keeping the flame.” The catalogue of music that Jerry wrote and performed peripherally to the Grateful Dead is unquestionably my favorite music out there, and I have been dying to see it performed live (by someone worthy) for as long as I can remember. As soon as I heard the opening notes to “Cats Down Under the Stars”, all of my skepticism was immediately thrown out the window. What was funny was that I was on my way from the men’s room as the music began, and without a view of the stage, I couldn’t tell if the music had began or if they were playing a Jerry Band tape as the house music.
I was totally caught off guard although I now realize that I should’ve expected them to be this awesome all along. The way I see it is that there is no way these guys would even consider trying to perpetuate this music on stage if they weren’t doing it the right way. This little cluster of confusion definitely set the precedent for the rest of the night. The band’s lineup was incredible- showcasing talent that far exceeded my expectations. Each member contributed tremendously to the whole JGB experience.
The first set included gems like “Catfish John”, “Crazy Love”, “They Love Each Other”, and “Tore Up Over You”; most of which were beautifully accompanied by gospel singers Shirley Starks and Cheryl Rucker who remained on stage for the majority of the night. Perhaps my favorite part about the JGB’s music; as well as the largest distinction between their music and that of the Grateful Dead’s, is that there is almost always at least 2 female accompanying vocalists (usually gospel-type singers like Jaclyn LaBranch and Gloria Jones from back in the day) that bring a much more soulful, interesting, and generally FULL sound to the songs. Sure Donna Jean played a crucial role in the Dead’s music, but her best work was undeniably done with the Jerry Garcia Band in the late 70’s (check out “Strange Man” on disc 2 of “Don’t Let Go, and you’ll know what I’m talking about). Anyway, back to the show.
Set 2 was jam packed with excellence as well including favorites like “Deal”, “Waiting for a Miracle”, and what made for one of the most incredible renditions of Jimmy Cliff’s “Sitting in Limbo” that I have ever heard bringing Cheryl Rucker to tears of joy. I have got to tell you, it was REALLY something seeing these guys on stage. After the band had left the stage, the fans along with drummer Pete Lavezzoli persuaded the rest of the band to take the stage for the encore. “What y’all wanna hear?” proclaimed Melvin Seals as he took the stage once again. I was front row pleading for a “Boogie on Reggae Woman” to no avail, but what ensued was perfect. The selection was a very extended jammed out version of Rubin & Cherise, a song which Jerry used to frequently forget the words to.
Towards the end of the jam, bass player Jimmy Tebeau dropped in a few minutes of some of the dirtiest bass jamming I’ve heard in quite a while making this the most memorable song of the night. Boy, did he make it look easy up there. Throughout the whole show, guitarist Stu Allen (whose guitar looked strikingly similar to one of Jerry’s) and Jimmy did an incredible job replicating the chemistry shared between Jerry and John Kahn during the best years of the JGB. I am so thrilled and relieved that last night’s show turned out the way that it did, and am totally pumped that I get to see them 2 more times next weekend at Bella Terra Music Festival and Benefit for the Barn before they head back to the West Coast! Thank you Melvin Seals & the JGB for keeping the legacy that is the Jerry Garcia Band alive!
